There are many products on the market that are effective against heartworm, and trying to keep them all straight can be challenging (even for us)!
We are happy to provide you with the product you want for your pet. To simplify the options, some of our most commonly used medications are listed below:
Revolution® (selamectin): A small-volume topical spot-on monthly medication applied to one spot at the back of your pet’s neck. Revolution® prevents heartworm, fleas, ear mites, and scabies mites, and aids in the control of roundworm and some species of ticks. For improved tick control, we recommend combining revolution with a tick prevention product.
Advantage Multi® (imidacloprid + moxidectin): A topical spot-on monthly medication applied in a few spots down your pet’s back. Advantage Multi® prevents heartworm, fleas, ear mites, scabies mites, roundworm, hookworm, and lungworm and aids in the control of whipworm, and demodex mites. For tick control we recommend adding a tick prevention product.
Interceptor™ (milbemycin oxime): A flavoured oral chew tablet given monthly as a treat. Interceptor™ prevents heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm. For flea and tick control we recommend adding a flea/tick control product.
Heartworm prevention medication is recommended for all dogs and cats in Ontario from June to November. This is the time of year when heartworm can be transmitted by mosquito bites.
